Pastors, leadership teams assemble for Convocation

By Michelle Hill
On Monday, May 7 Bishop Berg welcomed nearly 300 priests and members of parish leadership teams to the Diocese of Pueblo Convocation.

Over the course of the next two days, attendees were lifted spiritually by the Amazing Parish team. Through team discussions and personal assessments, they learned how to best make use of their working styles by embracing spiritual vulnerability and welcoming healthy team conflict. They developed an understanding of the three most important building blocks necessary to create an amazing parish: a passion for evangelizing and discipleship, a commitment to a healthy organization and a reliance on prayer and the sacraments. These ideas are reflected in the words of Pope Francis, “The parish is the presence of the Church in a given territory, an environment for hearing God’s words, for growth in the Christian life for dialogue, proclamation, charitable outreach, worship and celebrations.”

Pastors assessed their strengths and shared their thoughts with the teams. Preaching, pastoral care, administration and leadership were all a part of the conversation. Pastors were impowered to improve or delegate challenging areas – teamwork was a big part of this process. Team prayer played a part in these conversations as well. Amazing Parish helped all those in attendance acknowledge, “Because a parish has the most important mission in the world, it’s critical that the parish leadership team intentionally prays together for their pastor, their parish, and the individual needs of each other.”

In addition, personal prayer and an intimate relationship with Jesus were emphasized, team meeting processes were evaluated, and priorities were identified. It was truly an amazing experience for all, which will impact our parishes and ultimately the entire diocese.

The Convocation came to a close Wednesday, May 9 with Mass for the priests celebrating jubilee anniversaries and a luncheon filled with grateful fellowship. Plans are currently underway for the 2019 Convocation. It will be an exciting process sure to build us all up and develop us as spirit filled, faithful members of the Church in Southern Colorado. Watch for news on how you can be involved!
