Catechetical Formation Process

CATECHIST FORMATION PROCESS

 

GOALS

The goal of the catechist formation process is to assist catechetical leaders and catechists in their ministry of supporting parents as the primary educators of their children so that together the Good News of the Gospel can be faithfully and effectively passed on to everyone.

The goal is that every catechetical leader as well as catechists in the Diocese of Pueblo achieve and maintain certification.

BASIC CERTIFICATION –  (Completion of Option 1, 2 or 3)

 

Option 1 – Echoes of Faith or Ecos de Fe – A Video/DVD Catechist Formation Program in English or Spanish (Use of accompanying workbooks is highly recommended)

Phase I – Ability to Communicate the Message (4 hours)

  • Getting Started as a Catechist (2 hours)
  • Methodology for Grades 1-2, or 3-4, or 5-6, or7-8 (2 hours)

Phase II – Spiritual and Human Formation (4 hours)

  • Roles of the Catechist (2 hours)
  • The Person of the Catechist (2 hours)

Phase III – Theological Formation (20 hours)

  • Liturgy and Sacraments (4 hours)
  • I Believe/We Believe – The Creed (4 hours)
  • Catholic Morality (4 hours)
  • Prayer and Spirituality (4 hours)
  • Introduction to the Scriptures (4 hours)

Phase IV – Adult Formation, a DVD providing helpful suggestions when working with adults.

 

It would be advisable for a beginning catechist to complete Phase I in either English or Spanish before beginning to teach.  The remaining Videos/DVD’s could then be completed within a three-year period.

Echoes of Faith Videos/DVD’s may be obtained at the Deanery level or checked out free of charge from the Media Center at the Diocesan Office.  Contact Joyce Rivera at 1-800-354-2729 ext 100 (Pueblo – 544-9861 ext 100).

Option 2 – Workshops on Similar Topics Listed in Echoes of Faith or Ecos de Fe Offered by a Pastor or Qualified Presenter

 

Option 3 – Two University of Dayton Courses plus a Teaching Certificate or Phase I of the Echoes of Faith Program

  • Survey of Catholic Doctrine or Catholic Beliefs (Dayton Course)
  • Sacraments (Dayton Course)
  • Phase I of the Echoes of Faith Program, or a Teaching Certificate from the Colorado State Department, or a similar workshop on Methodology

Upon completion of one of these options, the Office of Lifelong Catechesis should be notified by the parish catechetical leader, and a certificate of completion will be issued.  Copies of these certificates should be kept on file in the parish or religious education office.

 

ONGOING EDUCATION FOR CATECHETICAL LEADERS AND CATECHISTS

 

To maintain certification and to continue in one’s own spiritual growth, it is important to complete approximately ten clock hours of religious formation each year.  These hours could consist of workshops, webinars, Dayton University courses, or similar religious enrichment experiences.

ADVANCED CERTIFICATION (Highly Recommended for CRE’s)

  • Option 1 – BS or BA in Religious Education, Theology, Sacred Scripture or Pastoral Ministry
  • Option 2 – Level II, New Wine, Ministry of Christian Service or Semillas Del Reino
  • Option 3 – Completion of Dayton University’s Level I and Level II program

DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (DRE) HAS A MASTERS DEGREE IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION, THEOLOGY, SACRED SCRIPTURE, OR PASTORAL MINISTRY.  A COORDINATOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (CRE) DOES NOT HAVE A MASTERS DEGREE.
