Obituary: Father John O’Flynn: 1936 - 2016

Reverend John Michael O’Flynn passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 11, 2016 in his homeland of Ireland.  His funeral was celebrated in his home town of Silvermines, Co Tipperary, Ireland on October 13, 2016. Deacon Steven Lumbert represented Bishop Stephen J. Berg at the funeral in Ireland.  A memorial service for Fr. O’Flynn was also held on November 3, 2016 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Pueblo.

Father O’Flynn was born September 24, 1936 in Tipperary, Ireland. He received his religious training in Ireland and obtained his master of arts at Notre Dame in 1970. He moved to Pueblo in June 1960 and worked as a teacher at Pueblo Catholic High School. On June 3, 1961, he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Charles Buswell at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Pueblo. Father O’Flynn served at St. Mary, Walsenburg; Our Lady of Guadalupe, La Junta; Mt. Carmel, Trinidad; Our Lady of Assumption, Pueblo; St. Patrick, Pueblo; St. Joseph, Salida; St. Rita, Mancos; St. Francis Xavier, Pueblo, and St. Anthony, Pueblo. His final ministry was in service to the residents at Primrose Retirement Community. During his tenure, Father O’Flynn was chaplain at Parkview Hospital as well as several Newman Clubs and Colorado State prisons throughout the diocese. He retired from active ministry on September 24, 2001.
