I Believe in Love

Article Series For Spiritual Development

In Honor of our Becoming The Diocese of The Little Way

By now, each of us has likely had the experience of coming across a title so often that we finally decided we should probably check out that particular book for ourselves.

Low and behold, we realize its perfect for what we happen to be going through at that point in our life, and had we tried to read it any sooner, it would not have landed with the same effect! One of those books for me is I Believe in Love: A Personal Retreat Based on the Teaching of St. Therese of Lisieux, by Fr. Jean C.J. D’Elbée, which is now considered a Catholic Classic. Perfect spiritual reading at any time, the added benefit is how much you can gain with only a few moments to spare each day. It is a distillation of her doctrine into a “reader-friendly set of mediations.” Each of the 10 Conferences, such as “Unshakeable Confidence” or “Great Desires, Humility, and Peace,” has the purpose of helping us “comprehend the love of God for us and to respond to it more fully.”

Blessed Paul VI, to be canonized on October 14, 2018, is quoted in the forward as saying: “What is the discovery to which the man of faith comes when he seeks the profound and complete sense of Divine Revelation? This discovery is love. God has above all revealed Himself as being Love. The whole history of salvation, the whole Gospel is love.” As Bishop Berg’s senior staff member dedicated to Networking & Equipping Spirit-Filled Evangelizers, according to The Joy of the Gospel, how can that possibly be accomplished without love, let alone a path to follow?

Our primary diocesan patroness provides a most suitable means for us to become missionary disciples after the very Heart of Jesus Christ, under the banner of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Victory! Each and every gain we make will be to her credit, the one wanted to spend “her Heaven doing good on earth.” As mentioned in the preface, St. Therese is the principle teacher in this book, which serves as a guide to happiness (4th Level!), and “is also a frame for a simple and universal program of spiritual renewal for the laity. Each installment of Today’s Catholic print edition will cover one of the chapters, including recommendations, links, and/or a prayer written by our dear little sister. Whether or not you get a copy of the book to dive deeper, this series is intended as a “boot camp” for anyone willing to accept her challenge.

Recommendation:
Over 400 Copies of 33 Days to Merciful Love were distributed ahead of Fr. Michael Gaitley’s presentations on St. Therese during our 75th Anniversary. Dust off your copy, or buy a new one, and then get after it, since it’s the perfect preparation for what’s to come!

Prayer from St. Therese:
“O Jesus, look on us with love and give us your sweet kiss. Amen.”
