Three Priests ordained in Pueblo

Bishop Stephen Berg ordained three transitional deacons to the priesthood on June 19 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Pueblo. In front of a packed cathedral, Stephen Injoalu, Isaac Kariuki and Carl Wertin laid prostrate during the Litany of Saints, knelt as the Bishop prayed the prayer of ordination, pledged obedience to the Bishop and his successors and had their hands anointed with the sacred chrism.

Reflecting back on his ordination, Father Carl Wertin said, “In the ordination rite the Bishop spoke words that called us to accompany and assist him. These words have been a great source of strength for me as I prepare to serve the church alongside so many,” he said. “Before the ordination I would find myself concerned at times as to how I could answer such a high calling, but these words remind me of the greatness of God and His work in the Church of which I serve as a part.”

Newly-ordained Father Stephen Injoalu was also moved by Bishop Berg. “It is hard to describe what it felt like, especially listening to the wonderful, insightful and edifying  words from the Bishop’s homily, ‘Called, consecrated, sent’ and the instructions from the Church.”

Father Injoalu went on to say, “This experience is too deep for words! I just love being a priest, and being a priest for the people of God, for its not just about me, but those to whom am I called to serve. For them I am ordained.”

Finally, Father Isaac Kariuki, said, “The week before my ordination and after my ordination, I was pondering deeply about the mystery of priesthood and what the grace of priesthood means to me. The best answer I got was from Saint John Maria Vianney who happens to be the patron saint of priests.” He goes on to say, “The following is his quote which touches my core of priesthood. He (St. John Maria Vianney) says, ‘Only in heaven will we know what a priest is. If we were to know this on earth, we would die not of grief but of love.’”

All three men began their first priesthood assignments on July 1. Father Stephen Injoalu is assigned as associate pastor in the San Juan Catholic Community in the San Luis Valley. Father Isaac Kariuki is assigned as associate pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Grand Junction and its mission of St. Ann in Palisade. Father Carl Wertin is assigned as associate pastor at Holy Trinity in Trinidad.
