Catechist Vocation

The call to the ministry of catechist is a vocation, an interior call, the voice of the Holy Spirit.  The Spirit serves as a guide in the development of the catechist’s vocation and spirituality, which is proper to the specific role each catechist has.  The spirituality centers on an encounter with Jesus Christ.  It is rooted in the living Word of God  (National Directory for Catechesis)

This is a sublime calling, and it is important that catechists be practicing Catholics who participate fully in the communal worship and life of the Church and who have been prepared for their apostolate by appropriate catechetical training.  Their commissioning by the Church is a participation in the divine calling to teach as Jesus did.  The Diocese of Pueblo is committed to preparing catechists well for their ministry and seeing to it they have sufficient resources for that preparation.

The Diocese considers it important for catechists to do the following:

  • Participate weekly in the Sunday Eucharist
  • Practice a disciplined habit of daily prayer
  • Complete the certification process
  • Participate each year in ongoing education
