Music & Liturgical Director

The Music & Liturgical Director is an integral member of the parish staff who provides
leadership in the planning and celebration of all parish liturgies and who develops and
coordinates all liturgical ministries to enable parishioners to encounter Jesus Christ through
prayer, the sacraments, music and worship. The Director is a professional who is responsible
for the planning, coordination and execution of music within the liturgical celebrations of the
parish. The Director has acquired, at a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in music, is
able to proficiently play piano and sing. The Director reports to the parish administrator under
the general care and guidance of the pastor.
Rooted and centered in the baptismal gift and grace of Jesus’ call to discipleship, the Music &
Liturgical Director is committed to working in a team environment to service the church,
promote gospel values, and growth in holiness. The Director must value collaboration and
mutuality in mission and ministry and recognizes the necessity for professional preparation and
ongoing formation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Ensures that the liturgical music assists the assembly to express the gift of faith that is
within them and to bring a spirit of unity through music into the celebration while
leading the parish music program, selecting and planning music for all liturgies;
accompanies and/or directs volunteer musicians for all weekend Masses as well as the
weekly school Mass.
• Invites, motivates and trains all volunteer music ministers; strengthening and supporting
music ministers, enabling and encouraging practice for all participating in music
ministry, and supporting new development in music ministries.
• Responsible for the development of repertoire and selection of appropriate liturgical
• Recruits and trains parishioners for various liturgical roles, involves new members and
parishioners of all ages, and schedules liturgical ministers.
• Demonstrates a basic knowledge theology and history of sacramental and liturgical
practices; knowledgeable regarding the liturgical year, liturgical principles and the
Church’s liturgical norms.
• Periodically review and evaluate the quality of worship and liturgical ministries.
• Joins with others to develop the liturgical spirit of the parish, fostering an atmosphere of
welcome and hospitality.
• Coordinates, schedules and provides guidance to parishioners for planning sacramental
liturgies such as weddings and funerals, special school services, as well as practical
preparation and coordination for musicians and cantors for sacramental liturgies and
other major celebrations.
• Keeps abreast of current developments in liturgy and musical is knowledgeable of and
comfortable with Church music literature in all forms and styles for the congregation,
multi-age ensembles, vocalists, and instrumentalists.
• Works collaboratively with parish staff, and school faculty and staff to discern and carry
forward the vision that best enables the church and school to offer ways for individuals
and families to encounter Christ and be formed as missionary disciples.
• Be present at Parish events including sacramental celebrations such as Confirmation,
reception of first Eucharist, Professions of Faith, weekend liturgies; be present at school
community events including Gala, Catholic Schools Week activities, Fun run, Back-to-
School events, Graduation, etc.
Other Responsibilities:
• Functions as a member of pastoral team, participating in regular staff meetings, and is
attentive to the larger needs and concerns of an active parish community
• Participate in parish leadership
• Collaborates with the parish administrator to plan and manage a budget pertaining to
music and liturgical expenses and revenues.
• College degree or equivalent in music training and experience
• Proficiency as a pianist and singer
• Ability to work as a member of a team
• Maintaining high standards of confidentiality
• Good written and oral communications skills
• Ability to supervise, coordinate and coach volunteers
Expected Hours of Work:
• Full-time exempt position
• Position requires flexibility; weekend and evening hours are expected as well as holy
days and special events.
