Durango Knight does charitable work in Guatemala

With assistance from Durango Knights of Columbus Council #1408, Brother Robert Gallegos accompanied seven doctors, two nurses, a physical therapist and 11 volunteers to Guatemala to provide optical services to residents of five different villages.

Gallegos trained in the operation of an eye machine to assist one of the optometrists to determine the need for additional treatment.  The group took along 435 pairs of prescription glasses, over 200 pairs of reading glasses and a number of sun glasses.  Each day they would load two trucks and visit the villages to treat the residents.

The group was organized through the United Methodist Church in Durango.  Organizers Larry and Sandy Turner have been taking volunteer groups to Guatemala for several years to provide optical services to remote villages.  Volunteers like Brother Gallegos provide much needed services and are warmed by the gratefulness of the local villagers.
